On the south side of the tunnel i.e.coming from the Oanes ferry, the alternative route begins about 1.1km before the tunnel itself on the left hand side of the road. It is marked only by one small sign so is easily missed. If coming from the north i.e. from the ferry at Tau, take a right onto Tunglandsvegen and left onto Jøssangvegen. Especially for those coming from the south, using the alternative route will mean much less uphill cycling than using the tunnel.
