Denmark 2017
The 'Mini' Tours
This year we fancied going back to Denmark. We had last been there in 1999 and had really enjoyed the touring, although this year we had to do things a little differently. Frank unfortunately just before Easter had prolapsed a disc in her lower spine and had been off work for 4 months. By the end of July she seemed to have recovered but she hadn't had much time out on the bike or to get fit. Therefore we weren't sure how she would cope with a full tour. Unfortunately the lovely 'Dana Anglia' the DFDS ferry that we used to use to get from Harwich to Esbjerg had long since stopped running so our only way to Denmark was to fly or to take our car with the bikes on the back. We decided to do the later and caught the Harwich to Hoek Van Holland ferry and then drove up to Denmark. Having the car with us gave us a safety net should Frank find that she couldn't manage the cycling.
We spent the first week on the lovely island of Fanø just off the west coast off Denmark near Esbjerg. This gave Frank a time to ride around the island and get her cycling legs before we set off for the first tour. The first tour around central Jutland went really well so we moved on up to North Jutland and did a second mini tour from Aalborg to Skagen.
The main highlights of our two Denmark mini tours for us were:
1. Spending most of the time on cyclepaths or tracks away from traffic.
2. Cycling 15km along the beach from Blokhus to Løkken. Absolutely amazing!
3. Spending several nights sleeping in the 'Shelterplads', the most noteable was the one at the Tversted Plantage just off route 1. It was a beautiful morning with such lovely views of the Østerklit Stokmølle.
4. Being back on Fanø, it is such a relaxing island.
